Sri Lanka, historically known as Ceylon, is an island of immense biodiversity and deep cultural heritage, lying at the crossroads of the Indian Ocean. From the misty peaks of the central highlands to the tropical lowland forests and sun-drenched coastal plains, this island nation is home to a remarkable array of cannabis landraces that have flourished in its diverse climates for generations.

Cannabis has been intertwined with Sri Lankan history for centuries, deeply rooted in Ayurvedic medicine, spiritual traditions, and cultural practices. Revered in ancient texts for its therapeutic properties, it has been used to restore balance in the body and mind, while also playing a role in traditional healing, religious rituals, and daily life. Beyond its medicinal and spiritual significance, cannabis has long been valued as a fiber crop and a source of sustenance in rural communities.
