Description:
The Udawalawe landrace represents a rare and largely undocumented Sri Lankan cannabis population, sourced from the rugged landscapes surrounding Udawalawe National Park. These plants exhibit classic South Asian NLD (Narrow Leaf Drug) morphology, growing tall and slender with thin leaflets and open, airy bud structures adapted to the humid tropical climate.
The aromatic profile is spicy and herbal, with hints of citrus and incense. The psychoactive effects are stimulating, cerebral, and long-lasting, aligning with the classic Southeast Asian sativa experience.
---
Context:
Udawalawe sits at the crossroads of Sri Lanka’s ancient cannabis traditions and modern conservation struggles. The surrounding national park is home to vast wildlife reserves, including one of the largest populations of wild elephants in Sri Lanka.
Historically, cannabis has been cultivated in this region for medicinal, spiritual, and recreational purposes, with its use deeply rooted in Sri Lankan Ayurveda and local cultural traditions. However, intensive government crackdowns on illicit cultivation have forced many farmers to abandon traditional cannabis farming or resort to highly secretive, small-scale grows deep in the forests.
Adding to the challenges, herds of wild elephants have been known to raid and consume cannabis plants, damaging crops and further discouraging cultivation. Meanwhile, the influx of mass-produced ‘Kerala Ganja’ (KG) from India has flooded local markets, reducing demand for traditional Sri Lankan landrace cannabis.
The combined impact of law enforcement, environmental pressures, and market changes has placed the Udawalawe landrace in critical danger, with fewer and fewer farmers willing to risk cultivating it.
