Description:

The Petnaree accession, sourced by Thut in 2022, is an obscure and little-documented cannabis variety from Mae Tha, Lamphun Province. While the exact genetic background is unknown, it is suspected to be a Northern Thai landrace, maintaining the classic sativa morphology of the region.

Plants are expected to grow tall and open-structured, with long, thin leaves and wispy, resinous flowers that develop over an extended flowering period. The aroma and effect profiles remain undocumented, though local Northern Thai landraces are often fruity, citrusy, or floral, with effects that are clear-headed, energetic, and long-lasting.

Context:

Lamphun Province, located in Northern Thailand, has a long history of traditional cannabis cultivation, particularly among ethnic minority communities who used cannabis for medicine, fiber, and local trade. The Mae Tha district, situated in a rural part of Lamphun, was historically a site of small-scale ganja farming, with landraces adapted to the region’s mountainous and subtropical climate.

While Thailand’s cannabis industry was once thriving, decades of government crackdowns and policy shifts led to the near-total suppression of traditional landrace cultivation. By the time of legalization in 2022, many landrace populations had already been lost, replaced by modern hybrids or abandoned due to changing economic priorities.

Current Status:

As of 2022, there is no clear documentation on whether Petnaree remains under cultivation or if its original farmers still maintain this variety. It is possible that this accession represents one of the last surviving expressions of a forgotten landrace, but further investigation is required to determine its authenticity and conservation status.

A return expedition is necessary to assess the region’s remaining landrace populations, verify whether traditional farmers still cultivate Petnaree, and explore conservation efforts before potential extinction.
