Description:

Muang Xay is a classic highland Lao landrace, sourced from the Pak Beng region of Oudomxay Province in Northern Laos. Situated within the Upper Lao Mekong Highlands, this region has long been a key trade and transit hub between Luang Prabang and Chiang Saen, historically serving as a waypoint for goods, travelers, and cannabis exports moving between Laos and Northern Thailand. This landrace exhibits the classic morphology of highland Southeast Asian sativas, with tall, elegant plants, elongated internodal spacing, and wispy, resinous flowers. It is well-adapted to the region’s warm, humid climate and thrives in the rich alluvial soils along the Mekong and its tributaries.

Aromatically, Muang Xay carries a bright and complex terpene profile, featuring earthy, herbal, and citrus notes, with occasional expressions of floral spice. The psychoactive effects are reported to be cerebral, energetic, and long-lasting, aligning with traditional highland Lao ganja known for its clear-headed euphoria and functional high.

Despite its historical significance, traditional cannabis cultivation in Muang Xay has declined in visibility over the past decade, with growers increasingly moving fields further from town to avoid scrutiny. This accession represents a snapshot of a disappearing cultivation landscape, preserving a landrace that may soon become difficult to find in its native region.

Context:

The Upper Lao Mekong Highlands have long been a crossroads of commerce and cultural exchange, particularly between Luang Prabang, Chiang Saen, and the wider Golden Triangle region. Historically, cannabis cultivation in the area was integrated into local agricultural systems, with plants grown for both local consumption and export into Thailand and beyond.

Pak Beng, the district where this landrace was sourced, is a critical transit point on the Mekong, known for its bustling market where cannabis from neighboring highland regions is often sold. While local production exists, much of what is found in the market today is sourced from other regions, reflecting shifts in cultivation patterns due to increased regulation and economic changes.

By 2012, cannabis was still relatively accessible in and around the village, though already shifting further into the surrounding countryside. By 2018, noticeable changes had taken place—local farms were fewer, and the presence of cannabis had become more discreet. By 2021, accessing traditional farms required traveling an hour outside of town, indicating further shifts in cultivation. Given the trajectory of development in Northern Laos, it is likely that by 2025, even fewer traditional farms remain near Muang Xay, making preservation efforts crucial.

This accession represents a rare opportunity to preserve a distinct highland Lao genetic expression, collected at a time when traditional cultivation was still present in the area.
