Description:
The cannabis cultivated at Khun Jai’s farm in Phiman Village represents a classic Lao-Isan (Mekong) landrace population, exhibiting tall, narrow-leafed structures, long internodal spacing, and exceptional resin production. Plants reach between 2-3 meters in height, thriving in the warm, dry climate of the Phu Phan Mountains.
Two dominant expressions are found within the population:
Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): A bold, robust phenotype with thick colas, strong lateral branching, and a dense trichome coating. Its aroma is deep and earthy, carrying herbal musk and woody undertones. The effects are potent, clear-headed, and stimulating.
Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): A more delicate, elongated phenotype producing cascading, foxtail-like colas with lighter, airier flowers. The aroma profile is floral and tropical, with bright mango overtones and a subtle herbal finish. The high is euphoric, energetic, and long-lasting, reflecting the classic cerebral effects of Mekong sativas.
Six years ago, Khun Don, Khun Jai’s nephew, began selecting plants based on their most intense mango aroma. Through successive backcrossing with the most fragrant individuals from his uncle’s farm, he refined the strain now known as Mango Tail—a variety exuding the unmistakable scent of freshly cut mangoes. It is decadent, expressive, and exceptionally enjoyable to smoke.

Context:
Khun Jai’s farm preserves an ancient Lao-Isan landrace population cultivated on the eastern fringe of the Phu Phan Mountains. This landrace is one of the most authentic expressions of the Mekong sativas, having been maintained for generations through traditional open-pollination methods that safeguard its genetic diversity and resilience.
Na Kae’s location—nestled at the northeastern edge of the Phu Phan range—contributes to a distinct terroir. The region’s environmental conditions produce expressions that are more similar to the cannabis of Dong Luang in Mukdahan than to the Kut Bak Plateau populations.
However, like much of Isan, local cultivation faces challenges. Excessive culling of males in an attempt to produce seedless flowers has led to both a genetic bottleneck and an increase in hermaphroditism. With fewer males present to pollinate the females, hermaphroditic plants are increasingly responsible for reproduction, potentially altering the long-term stability of this landrace population.
Khun Don’s work with Mango Tail is a fascinating small-scale project, showcasing the potential of directed selection while still preserving landrace characteristics.

Type: Domesticate Landrace IBL
Altitude: ~200m

Current Status:
Limited seed stock available, but additional acquisitions are possible if demand supports further sourcing.
The broader Phiman Village landrace population remains under threat due to selective male culling and external pressures.
A conservation effort focusing on increasing male populations in remote growing areas would help stabilize the genetic pool for future generations.
