Description:

Kirivong is a legendary Southern Cambodian Landrace from the Bassac Flood Plains of Takeo Province, nestled along Cambodia's Green Triangle near the Vietnamese border. This ancient landrace is renowned for its psychedelic effects and complex aromatic profile, embodying the true essence of Khmer sativas.

Kirivong is characterized by two outstanding phenotypes:

Green Pheno: Classic narrow-leafed structure with bright lime-green buds, tropical fruit aromas, and a potent, energetic high.

Red Pheno (Cambodian Red): A rarer, more sought-after phenotype displaying red-tinted flowers with a distinctively sweet, earthy aroma and a long-lasting, almost psychedelic effect.

The plants are lanky and open in structure, maintaining the classic Southeast Asian sativa morphology. They grow tall, reaching heights of 2-4 metres, with long, airy colas and excellent trichome coverage.

Despite their open structure, the buds are dense and resinous. Aromatically, Kirivong expresses a tropical terpene profile ranging from sweet mango and citrus to earthy spice and incense. The psychoactive effects are intensely cerebral and euphoric, delivering a clear-headed, energetic high with a touch of psychedelic introspection.

Context:

Kirivong is deeply rooted in Southern Cambodia’s cannabis heritage, cultivated for centuries by traditional Khmer farmers. The region's unique climate—shaped by the Bassac Flood Plains and Mekong River Delta—provides fertile alluvial soils and a tropical monsoon climate ideal for sativa cultivation.

Historically, cannabis was used as food, for medicinal, spiritual, and recreational purposes, embedded in the cultural practices of local Khmer communities. Its legendary status is partly due to its psychedelic potency, which made it a prized export during the Golden Era of Southeast Asian Cannabis in the 1970s.

However, modernization, political repression, and economic pressures have severely impacted traditional cultivation in Kirivong. Since the late 90s but quickly accelerating in 2021, aggressive eradication campaigns have targeted the small landrace growing areas, leading to a rapid decline in cultivation. Many farmers have been forced to abandon their fields, resulting in a severe genetic bottleneck. The situation worsened in 2022 when Thai legalization flooded the Cambodian market with modern hybrids, crashing local prices and threatening the purity of the Kirivong landrace through genetic introgression. These challenges have pushed this ancient lineage to the brink of extinction.

Current Status:

Kirivong is on the brink of extinction. Aggressive eradication campaigns, excessive culling of males, and genetic introgression from modern hybrids are rapidly depleting the landrace’s genetic diversity.
