Description:

The cannabis cultivated in Dong Luang district is a classic Lao-Isan (Mekong) landrace population, characterized by tall, elegant ‘sativa’ morphology, long internodal spacing, and high resin production. These plants reach between 2-3 meters in height, thriving in the warm, dry climate of the Phu Phan Mountains.

Two primary expressions are present in the population:

  • Tiger Tail (Hang Suea): Known for its bold, robust structure, this phenotype has thicker colas, strong lateral branching, and a dense trichome coating. The terpene profile leans toward earthy spice, herbal musk, and deep, woody undertones. Psychoactive effects are strong, clear-headed, and energizing, making it a highly sought-after selection for daytime use.

  • Squirrel Tail (Hang Krarok): A more delicate, elongated phenotype, producing cascading, foxtail-like colas and lighter, airier flowers. The aroma is sweet and floral, often displaying tropical fruit, mango, and subtle herbal notes. The high is uplifting, euphoric, and long-lasting, reflecting the classic cerebral effects of Mekong sativas.

The overall terpene spectrum within the Dong Luang population ranges from earthy spice to bright, sweet fruit, with notable mango and herbal overtones. The psychoactive effects remain clean, stimulating, and paranoia-free, making this accession a quintessential representation of Isan’s historic cannabis heritage.

Context:

The farms of Dong Luang preserve an ancient Lao-Isan landrace population cultivated in the eastern fringe of the Phu Phan Mountains of Mukdahan. This landrace represents one of the most authentic expressions of the traditional Mekong sativas, maintained by the community for generations using open-pollination methods that preserve genetic diversity and natural vigor.

Dong Luang’s position relative to the Phu Phan mountains with a north, north east exposure leads to a unique terroir expressing itself differently from the rest of the Phu Phans, being more similar to the populations of Na Kae in Sakhon Nakhon province than the cannabis of the Kut Bak Plateau.

Unfortunately excessive culling of males in an attempt to produce seedless flowers is causing both a genetic bottleneck and a higher occurrence of hermaphroditism. Not enough males survive throughout the area to pollinate all the plants, leading to the hermaphroditic plants to pollinate a significant portion of the population.

Current Status:

Ban Lao Dong landrace is at risk of extinction. The introduction of modern hybrids and economic pressures have drastically reduced traditional cultivation in Dong Luang. Many farmers have been forced to abandon their fields, leading to a genetic bottleneck and increasing genetic introgression from foreign strains.
