Description:
Chanderkhani Valley is a serene, historically significant region in Himachal Pradesh, stretching East to West perpendicular to the Kullu Valley. The Chanderkhani Pass (3660m) serves as a natural bridge between Kullu Valley and Malana Valley, once a crucial transit point for visitors before the road to Malana was completed. Today, this valley is a tranquil, lesser-known charas-producing area compared to the bustling Parvati Valley.
The charas (hand-rubbed hashish) from Chanderkhani Valley is revered for its potent psychoactive effects and rich aromatic profiles. Terpene expressions range from Mango-Garlic to Gassy-Piney, with occasional notes of rotten fruit and sweet, fruity outliers. This diversity is largely attributed to the open-pollinated feral and domesticated landrace populations thriving in the valley's unique microclimates.
Three key villages contribute to the valley's charas production:
Rumsu - North Facing (2100m): The darkest, wettest part of the valley, producing plants with exceptional humidity resistance and elongated internodal spacing due to low light exposure. Garlic/Shallot undertones are prominent among the feral population here.
Pulag - North Facing (2500m): The highest village, situated near glaciers and above 3000m in some fields. Pulag’s landrace expressions are among the most potent and resinous, benefitting from high-altitude conditions and rich soils.
Hallan - South Facing (2100m): Blessed with abundant sunlight, Hallan is known for its flavorful charas, especially from the lower apple terraces, while the upper fields produce potent resinous flowers. These landraces demonstrate remarkable adaptability and resilience, honed through centuries of natural selection and traditional cultivation practices.

Context:
Chanderkhani Valley has remained a significant yet lesser-known charas-producing region in Himachal Pradesh, with its cultivation practices deeply rooted in tradition. The valley’s varied microclimates, shaped by elevation, sunlight exposure, and terrain, have fostered distinct expressions of Himalayan cannabis that continue to thrive in both domesticated and wild settings.
Historically, cultivation in the region has been semi-domesticated, with patches often located on steep, terraced slopes where plants are left to grow naturally before being rubbed, often in place for Charas production.
Rumsu and Pulag, with their high-altitude terraces and rugged landscapes, have preserved some of the most vigorous and resilient plants, while Hallan, with its sun-exposed lower slopes, has long been known for its particularly flavorful charas.
